data privacy, security and confidentiality
We’ll never sell your data.
Our commitment to our ranchers, farmers and producers, and an open invite to the industry.

We’ve never sold your data,

and we never will. Ever.

Ranchers, farmers and producers come first, and that will never change. That’s why the agricultural technology industry as a whole needs to commit to the right standard when it comes to the data that matters.

YOU'LL FIND THIS ALL AT THE HEART OF OUR TERMS OF SERVICE. AT HALTER, WE CALL IT THE NO-SALE STANDARD.

THE
NO-SALE
STANDARD
We’ll never sell your data. Our commitment to ranchers and farmers, and an open invite to the industry.
What’s the real value of ranch data? It's what you do with it.

It helps us build better tools that work harder for your ranch or farm.
It helps you know where your cattle are, understand your land better, and make smarter decisions.
It helps us discover ways to improve ranching and farming we haven’t even thought of yet.

You can’t put a price on that.

Ranchers, farmers and producers come first, and that will never change.
That’s why the agricultural technology industry as a whole needs to commit to a no-sale standard when it comes to your data.
‍
So here’s our commitment.
We have never sold your data, and we never will. Ever.
‍
Instead, we protect your data, and we use insights to make Halter better for you.
You’ll find this all at the heart of our Terms of Service.
‍
At Halter, we’re leading with a permanent commitment we call The No-Sale Standard.
‍
If you’re in the business of agricultural technology, we’re inviting you to join us.
Put your commitment in writing. Update your Terms of Service and publish them.
Because we don’t think this should just be a promise. We think it should be the industry standard. Together, we can protect what’s important for ranchers and farmers.

We’ve put our name to it.

FAQs

Why the No-Sale Standard?
  • We know how important it is to ranchers that information about their operation doesn’t end up in someone else’s hands. We don’t think selling data has a place in agriculture. So rather than just telling you we don’t sell your data, we’re making it a permanent, public commitment: We have never sold your data. And we never will. Ever. Instead we protect your data, and we use insights to make Halter better for you.
  • Halter’s No-Sale commitment covers anything that identifies you, your ranch or your animals, including information like your name and contact details, property location and boundaries, pasture maps, animal locations, grazing boundaries, fencelines and records tied to your individual animals.
  • We think every rancher and farmer deserves this, whichever technology they choose. That’s why we’re inviting the rest of the AgTech industry to make the same commitment: keep personal data personal, publish their Terms of Service on their websites, and commit to the same level of data privacy and protection we hold ourselves to at Halter. Because together, we can protect what’s important for ranchers and farmers.
How is data changing the way ranches and farms are run?
  • You’ve always used data to run your operation. What you notice checking the herd, the notes in your calving book, knowing which cow is always last to the gate. That’s all data.
  • What’s changing is how much you can learn from it, where it sits and what you can do with it. The new way helps you spot problems sooner, make better decisions and get more from your operation.
  • Data doesn’t replace your experience or instincts. It gives you a clearer picture of what’s happening, so you can run your ranch or farm with more confidence. You’re still the one calling the shots.
How do you keep my data safe?
  • We have a dedicated cybersecurity team, and your data is encrypted, backed up and monitored. It's encrypted with industry-standard encryption, both when it's stored and when it's sent. Even within Halter, access to your data is limited to the people who need it to improve our products and services for you.
  • You control who has access to what in the Halter app. With a range of user roles and permissions, you decide what each person on your ranch or farm can see and do. For example, you can assign view-only roles, allowing someone to see relevant information without being able to make changes. You’re in control.
Who owns my data?
  • Anything you put into the Halter app belongs to you. That includes your personal information, farm details, pasture pictures, herd records and notes; as well as information you enter about animal health, heat, pasture and animal weight; and grazing boundaries, mapping, and task management data. You also own your animals' location data.
  • Halter owns the technology behind the system, including our hardware, software and models, as well as the data they generate. This includes system outputs, aggregated data and anonymised data which we use to keep improving our products and services for every farmer, rancher and producer.
  • Your farm or ranch information remains yours to use in the app.
I graze public land. Could a federal agency make you hand over my data?
  • Grazing on public land doesn't give any government agency access to your Halter data. We don't voluntarily share your data with any government agency, in the US or anywhere else.
  • Even if you receive federal or state funding for Halter, your data remains protected under The No-Sale Standard.
