Halter's 2025 year in review: A big year for US ranchers and virtual fencing

min read

2025 was a huge year for Halter and ranchers across the United States using virtual fencing to run more productive, sustainable operations.

From major product releases to industry partnerships and rapid growth across the US, 2025 showed how technology is helping ranchers level up their operations, while spending less time behind cattle and more time where it matters.

2025 by the numbers: What Halter ranchers accomplished

Ranchers and farmers using Halter achieved some impressive milestones this year:

  • 352,939 miles of virtual fencing set across the globe -far enough to go to the moon, and halfway back
  • 354 million miles walked by Halter cattle, equivalent to walking around the Earth over 14,000 times
  • 1.49 million hours of cattle shifting around the ranch - just over 62,000 days, which also means…
  • 62,000 days saved not chasing cattle
  • 3.1 billion hours of cattle behavior data recorded

New features released in 2025

2025 was a big year for product development, with major feature releases designed specifically to give beef ranchers more flexibility and control.

The Beef Product Update was one of the most significant releases Halter has ever shipped.

This long-awaited update gave beef ranchers more freedom to use virtual fencing without constraints, alongside powerful new functionality and a more intuitive product experience.

What was included?

  • Set multiple breaks within one paddock
  • Preferentially feed subgroups of cattle
  • Set one break across multiple pastures
  • Use previous breaks as templates for new breaks
  • Passively remote shift cattle between pastures
  • Choose where cattle will be shifted in the next break (new area or total area of next break)
  • Start the next shift when there's another on-going
  • Set up multiple scheduled shifts
  • Label cattle within a herd

More product improvements ranchers loved

  • Map pins: mark hazards, fixes required, or a favorite place to watch the sunset
  • Virtual lasso: select and action multiple cattle on the map - turn on LEDs, change mobs, or adjust labels
  • Emojis for mob names: use emojis to add a bit of fun to ranching
  • Notifications hub: manage all Halter notifications in one place
  • Tower status, delivery, and deployment information now available in-app
  • Notifications for collars that aren’t moving: alerts when a collar hasn’t detected movement for over an hour
  • In-app tips when drawing breaks: added confidence that the best breaks are being created for the herd

The team stayed busy all year, thanks to the incredible feedback and feature requests from ranchers.

Halter partners with the Bureau of Land Management

In 2025, Halter launched an exciting new partnership with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Foundation for America’s Public Lands to enhance access for ranchers and the public on BLM-managed lands in California.

The collaboration includes $2.7 million in support for ranchers adopting Halter’s world-leading virtual fencing technology, helping improve productivity, sustainability, and land stewardship - while reducing the need for physical fencing.

This initiative has now been rolled out at the Cotoni-Coast Dairies National Monument, supporting modern ranching alongside multi-use public land management that benefits both agriculture and recreation.

A few milestones we're proud of

  • Almost 700,000 Halter collars are now live globally - nearly tripling in just 12 months
  • TIME named Halter’s app and collar in the 100 Special Mentions section of its annual list of global groundbreaking inventions for 2025
  • Halter raised a Series D funding round of USD$100M, enabling faster development of tools that make ranches more profitable and sustainable
  • Founder and CEO Craig Piggott featured on the cover of Forbes, sharing Halter’s journey from Morrinsville to Missouri and how the technology is transforming cattle ranching
  • Halter is now live in 22 US states, up from 3 states in 2024

Looking ahead to 2026

We're incredibly grateful for the support of ranchers throughout 2025. Building tools that increase productivity and deliver real value on ranch is what drives the Halter team every day.

We’re excited to see what 2026 brings, and what ranchers will achieve next with Halter.
