What can you do with Halter?

Virtual fencing

Maximise your land with unlimited fencing in your pocket. Halter’s smart collars and app let you draw, move and remove fences in minutes.

  • Utilise more grass and consistently back fence
  • Fence waterways, retire bush and areas unsuitable for grazing
  • Run more mobs, without the extra labour

Remote shifting

Subdivide paddocks and shift cattle more frequently. Vibration cues aid cattle in shifting so you can graze flexibly without the constraints of labour and physical fencing.

  • A consistent and calm experience for your cattle
  • Oversight of your cattle’s location, 24/7
  • Adapt your grazing plan with a few taps on the app

How it works

The Collar

The ergonomic, durable and sleek solar-powered collars transmit data to and from the nearest tower.

The Tower

Easily installable solar-powered towers send data between the collars and the app.

The App

The easy-to-use mobile app gives you a bird’s-eye view of your farm. Create virtual fences and remotely manage and shift stock.

If you had an unlimited fencing budget,

the
flexibility to set up and move fences anywhere each day,

and ability to move your cattle with the press of a button...

How would you farm?

Enable rotational grazing

Grow & utilise more pasture

Set up flexible, virtual fences without the constraints of physical fencing

Halter removes a handful of the barriers that have made rotational grazing impractical: cost, time and logistics.

With the app, you can create and move virtual fences in a few taps - so you can graze your land how you want.

Keep grazing pressure constant through rotational grazing

Graze out areas you previously struggled to get pressure on. By utilising smaller breaks with regular shifts, you can maintain grazing pressure and promote better quality regrowth.

Feed your cattle accurately and consistently

Draw your breaks precisely using either m² per head, area (ha), or kg/DM per head to allocate accurately. No more mental math or estimates.

Drive profitability

Increase product per hectare

Increase live weights

Whether you want to increase individual weight gain and move cattle off quicker, or carry more stock on the same land, virtual fencing and shifting helps you grow more grass and farm the way you’ve always wanted.

Higher weaning weights

Make sure calves get access to the best feed first. Virtual fences mean calves are free to creep graze ahead, while mums are held in their break.

Better pasture quality for sheep

Hit the right spots to clean up tag and leave higher quality feed for sheep.

Environmental

Look after your land & people

Prevent & minimise damage on sensitive areas

Choose the areas you want cattle to graze (and the areas you don’t) without the cost and permanency of physical fencing, and let sensitive corners of your farm regenerate to native bush.

Keep cattle out of waterways

Flexibility in fencing means no extra costs to fence off waterways, especially those that aren’t there all year round.

Keep your staff healthy and happy

Reduce health and safety risks especially on hill country - less fatigue, and a safer workload.

Simply move cattle from your phone on those cold and rainy days.

Frequently asked questions

How is Halter's beef product different to what you've built for dairy farms?

After 10 years of developing virtual fencing and remote shifting technology for dairy farms, we've taken these learnings and built a dedicated product for beef operations.

We worked closely with partnership farms and industry to understand the unique challenges beef farms face, and launched our easy to use virtual fencing and remote shifting as a result. Just like with dairy, we'll continue to add to our features, based on the feedback we get from beef farmers.

How do the collar cues work for beef cattle?

Beef cattle are trained to the Halter system over 7 to 10 days. Once cattle are trained, they respond primarily to sound and vibration cues.

When cattle are grazing within a virtual break, they do not receive any collar cues. If they step outside of the break, a sound cue will play from either the right or left side of the collar, directing them away from the sound and back into the virtual break.

If they ignore the sound cues, they will receive a low-energy electric pulse (1/10th of the regulated maximum energy of an electric fence) which leads them to step back into the virtual break area.

When it’s time to shift to their next break, a vibration cue will let cattle know when they’re facing the right direction (i.e. towards the new break), which encourages them to move to the fresh grass.

Please note that Halter's collar cues for dairy cows are different to those used for beef cattle.

What connectivity do I need on my farm to use Halter?

Our system is designed for remote locations. It uses solar-powered towers that don’t need cell coverage, providing reliable performance no matter where your farm is located.

What animals can I collar with Halter?

Only cattle. No sheep, goats or horses sorry!

How are Halter collars and towers different from other systems?

Halter collars and towers are the result of nearly 10 years of research and development.

Dual speakers deliver clear left–right sound cues and a vibration confirms which direction to walk, so cattle quickly learn predictable, controllable guidance. The solar-powered panels are on the top of the collar, where they get maximum light exposure across the day. That position helps keep collars charged more reliably through short winter days and shaded grazing.

Halter towers are solar-powered and easy to install, giving you full-property coverage so collars can always receive instructions and transmit data.

What support do I get from Halter when I become a customer?

As a Halter farmer, you’ll have a dedicated Territory Manager based in your region. They’ll work with you to make sure you’re getting the most out of the Halter system, with practical guidance and ongoing check-ins.

You’ll also have access to our 24/7 New Zealand-based customer support team via the Halter app. They’ll help with day-to-day questions quickly and general app support.

"Halter is one of the most profitable investments we’ve made on our ranch."

Daniel Mushrush

Mat Hocken
Manawatū. 920 cows, Dairy

"With Halter, this is the only way I see that we can grow the number of cattle we graze. We can utilize the forage far more effectively and efficiently."

Grace Magruder

“I was quite skeptical. But after a week, you could tell it was gonna be amazing. We’re gonna see about a 30-pound gain at weaning.”

Mark and Sherrie Stokman
