The technology behind Halter

A team of over 100 engineers and designers crafts every part of Halter's system, combining hardware, software, and AI into one connected platform to enable more productive ranching.

The Collar

Reliable, solar-powered and ergonomic

The Halter Collar is the foundation of the system; a solar-powered, ergonomically designed smart collar that combines word-first technology, durability, and animal comfort. Every detail has been engineered to perform year after year, while keeping animal well-being at the heart of design.

Engineered for durability
Weather-resistant, dust-sealed, and solar-powered for year-round reliability.
Designed for comfort
Ergonomic fit with quick-adjust straps for easy, secure fitting.
Artificial intelligence, built in
Directional audio and vibration cues to guide animals in a way that is predictable and reliable.
Works anywhere you can see the sky
The collars stay connected so your system keeps working where it matters.
Built for remote, expansive land
The rugged and hard to reach parts of your ranch are now covered.
No infrastructure cost
Getting started doesn't require anything on your land, just collars on your cattle.
Graze land you can't build on
Public land, leased ground, and seasonal country are all within reach, with no permanent setup.

The App

Manage the ranch from anywhere.

Create virtual fences, move cattle, and monitor herd and pasture performance with live data from your operation. Built with producers' real-world input, the Halter app is advanced technology that's simple to use, giving you the insights and tools you need to manage your ranch.

Halter Intelligence

Advanced engineering you don't see

Underneath the hood, there's a world of smart software and machine learning models that power Halter's intelligence, turning raw data into insights ranchers can use. That's what lets the collars move and contain cattle, and monitor grazing behavior across your operation. All running 24/7 in the background.

Smart Data Platform

Every data point, working for your farm

Each collar collects and sends over 6,000 data points every minute to Halter’s cloud-based data platform. This information is processed in real time, then surfaced in the mobile or web app as clear, actionable insights that farmers can use to make better daily decisions.

The Cowgorithm®

Artificial intelligence that understands animal behaviour

The world-first algorithm that automatically trains animals to respond to directional sound cues from the collar, unlocking virtual fencing and remote shifting. This is the brains of Halter and the guts behind how & why Halter’s virtual fencing works so well.

Frequently asked questions

Which countries have satellite-enabled collars available?

Satellite-enabled collars are currently available for beef farms in New Zealand, and ranches in the United States. Launching soon for beef operations in Australia.

What animals can I collar with Halter?

Only cattle. No sheep, goats or horses sorry!

How are Halter collars different from other systems?

Halter collars and towers are the result of nearly 10 years of research and development.

Dual speakers deliver clear left–right sound cues and a vibration confirms which direction to walk, so cattle quickly learn predictable, controllable guidance. The solar-powered panels are on the top of the collar, where they get maximum light exposure across the day. That position helps keep collars charged more reliably through short winter days and shaded grazing.

The latest Halter collars can also connect directly to satellite, so no on-farm tower infrastructure is required.

What connectivity do I need on my farm to use Halter?

Halter is designed to work in remote locations. If you’re a beef operation in the United States or New Zealand, you have the option to get Halter’s satellite-enabled collars. If you’re in Australia, Halter’s solar-powered towers don’t need cellular coverage, providing reliable performance no matter where your farm is located.

Why did Halter introduce direct-to-satellite connectivity for collars?

For large and remote beef operations, the cost and logistics of installing towers have, at times, been out of reach.

We introduced satellite connectivity to change that, and it's available exclusively for beef farmers and ranchers. Now, satellite-enabled Halter collars can work anywhere across your beef operation - no towers or cellular coverage required. Whether you're farming across expansive terrain, managing cattle in remote areas, or operating in a location where installing towers wasn't possible before, you can now access the full benefits of Halter's virtual fencing technology.

Please note: direct-to-satellite connectivity is only available for beef farmers and ranchers. Dairy farmers continue to use Halter's tower-based system, which is purpose-built for the high-frequency data demands of dairy operations.

Are the app features different for satellite-enabled collars?

No - the Halter app features are the same whether your collars connect via satellite or towers.

Will the satellite-enabled collars work with tree cover?

Yes. Halter works under light tree cover in areas where you can still see the sky. If you have any questions about your specific operation, reach out to your local Territory Manager.

Can I still get Halter’s tower system on my beef farm?

Yes. If your operation is intensive and flat, the tower system may be a better option. Talk to your local Halter rep to learn more about whether a tower or satellite-connected system is best for you.

Can I get satellite-enabled collars on my dairy farm?

No, not right now. Satellite-enabled collars are for beef farms and stations only. Halter's tower-based system is purpose-built for the high volumes of data that dairy operations depend on - things like real-time heat detection, animal behaviour, and health alerts. For dairy farmers, the tower system remains the best solution.
